Heart Stent Surgery or Coronary Angioplasty

Coronary Angioplasty to coronary artery with DES

What is a heart stent surgery procedure?

Also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), heart stent surgery or coronary angioplasty is an invasive procedure performed to open blockages in the coronary arteries. During coronary angioplasty, your cardiologist may perform angioplasty with balloon catheters to clear the blockage and restore blood flow to your heart muscle tissue. Then, a drug-eluting stent is often placed at the site of blockage to keep It open for a longer period. Usually, 2 to 3 stents are placed during heart stent surgery. This is done in a special operation theatre called cath-lab.

Who needs heart stent surgery?

If you’re experiencing chest pain (angina) or heart attacks, your doctor may recommend coronary angioplasty to help relieve your symptoms. During a typical procedure, doctors insert a small tube into an artery and steer it to your heart. Then they inflate a tiny balloon at one end of a stent (wire mesh). Once it’s in place, they deflate it and pull out both pieces.

Coronary angioplasty is a non-surgical procedure that clears blocked arteries and improves blood flow to your heart. During coronary angioplasty, a cardiologist will insert a catheter (or small tube) into your artery, near your heart. The catheter has an inflatable balloon at its tip that can be inflated or deflated to open narrowed or blocked arteries so blood can flow freely through them again.

Coronary angioplasty is a safe procedure, but it is not without risk. Complications include bleeding and damage to nearby blood vessels or other structures. Risks can be minimized by ensuring that your health care provider is properly trained in coronary angioplasty, and that he or she follows all necessary protocols for performing and monitoring your procedure.

Angioplasty is usually a short procedure, which is followed by several hours of rest. You may be asked to take a blood thinner for seven days or so to avoid clots and to allow your body time to recover. After you are discharged from the hospital, avoid strenuous exercise and activities that could raise your blood pressure for two weeks, as they could trigger more blockages. If you want to get back into normal activities faster than two weeks, seek advice from your doctor before doing so.

Heart stent surgery cost in Hyderabad is not fixed and is quite variable from hospital to hospital and patient to patient. The cost typically starts form one lakh amd may go upto 6 lakhs depending on number of stents, number of balloons and other gadgets used

Among PTCA and CABG, there is no clear winner in different trials. PTCA procedure is best for one person and CABG is best for another one. Influenced by several factors, including the number of vessels involved, the amount of myocardium supplied by the affected vessels, the complexity of the blockage, the likelihood of tackling all the major blockages, and patient comorbidities such as diabetes, and patient preference.
